Five tips for the first weeks after orthopedic surgery

·4 min read

Practical guidance on pacing activity, sleep, and follow-up care after common orthopedic procedures.

The first weeks after orthopedic surgery set the tone for the months that follow. These tips are practical themes we hear from surgeons and therapists; they are not a substitute for your written discharge instructions.

1. Protect the plan you were given

Follow weight-bearing, brace, and movement restrictions exactly, even when you feel better than expected. Early “testing” often creates setbacks that are invisible at first.

2. Prioritize sleep and nutrition

Healing is metabolically expensive. Consistent sleep, adequate protein, and hydration support tissue repair and pain tolerance better than any single gadget.

3. Use pain as information—not permission

Some discomfort with prescribed exercise can be normal; sharp, escalating, or unusual pain should trigger a call to your care team. When in doubt, ask.

4. Pace activity by symptoms and schedule

“Doing more” is not always “doing better.” Many protocols advance by time and tolerance, not by willpower alone. Track what you actually completed; it helps your therapist adjust intelligently.

5. Keep communication lines open

Send updates on swelling, night pain, medication changes, or new activities before your next visit when possible. Small details change recommendations more than patients expect.
